Hanover Post August 2024 about Bill 185

Toronto Star re: Bill 185

I would like to share how the people of West Grey have been impacted by Doug Ford government’s actions that further erode the rights of citizens.

Saugeen Preservation Society represents residents in West Grey who are engaged in a fight against THREE separate gravel mines adjacent to each other in an environmentally sensitive, flood prone area straddling the Saugeen River and impacting multiple homes and businesses.

Removing our right to appeal under the Planning Act impedes our ability to fully represent the public interest. It puts us at the mercy of our local council to do the right thing and deny the applicants rezoning applications, so residents can participate at all stages of the Ontario Land Tribunal process.

Removing our right to appeal to the OLT is not governing for the people. It only serves to tip the scales even further in favour of the mismanaged aggregate industry which is already prioritized over the environment and the public’s best interest.

Judi Smelko, Saugeen Preservation Society, West Grey
